The Ministry of Environment and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko has said that his Ministry is in the process of enacting a waste management bill that will provide a legislative framework for an efficient and sustainable management of waste in the Country.
In a speech read on his behalf by the Chief Administrative Secretary Hon. Mohamed Elmi today during the National Environmental Trust Fund (NETFUND) Green Innovations Awards,, the CS said that the Awards programme recognises waste management as a critical intervention towards environmental management.
He thanked the NETFUND team for the Green Innovations Awards (GIA). "These Awards are important to catalyze green innovations especially at the grassroots level and provide much needed impetus in job creation and poverty alleviation". the CS noted.
Further, Tobiko said that the NETFUND GIA is one of the programmes identified under the Third Medium Term Plan of the Vision 2030 to support the Country transition to a Circular and Green Economy.
"Award Programmes such as this, serves as a catalyst for all Kenyans to come up with innovative projects that can support the Country to achieve the 10% tree cover target by 2022". the CS said.
He applauded the applicants who participated in this programme and congratulated the winners for their exemplary innovations and best practices.
Among the winners were Mr. Enoch Sikolia who got recognition for his Televised Environmental Conservation article(Garbage Rivers). In the attainment of 10% tree cover category, the Eco Green Bamboo for Innovation Group from Busia scooped the award, while the Air Pollution Control category went to a Boiler Scrubber with energy recovery- air pollution control project in Nairobi.
The Climate Change category was won by Mr. John Githinji from Laikipia County who practices climate smart Agriculture technologies in his farm. The Environmental Education and Public Awareness category was taken by a conservation and restoration of the Colobus monkey Migratory Corridor group from Kwale County. Nalena Pads, a Lenana High School project in Trans Nzoia that makes sanitary pads from sugarcane waste emerged the winner in the waste management category.
The Function was also attended by Principal Secretaries Dr. Chris Kiptoo Environment and Forestry, Dr. Julius Muia National treasury, the Belgium Ambassador to Kenya H.E. Nicolas Nihon, the NETFUND Board of trustees chairman and CEO Hon. Moses Akaranga and Mr. Samson Toniok respectively.
