Lenana Girls High School

Lenana Girls High School (LGHS)
--Holistic Approach to Transforming Lives

Strong academics, supported by excellent infrastructure and resources.
Common Ground for Africa is establishing a state of the art, girls boarding high school providing 8-4-4 system of education. Driven by leadership, entrepreneurship, technology and innovation, the high school serves talented, but economically disadvantaged girls who demonstrable leadership potential and willing to get their hands dirty.

Vision:
To develop transformational leaders through an innovative approach to education

Mission:
To provide a nurturing and supportive environment within which girls from disadvantaged backgrounds can develop their full potential in academic and personal development and to address the imbalance in access to quality education and leadership opportunities.

Academics
A high quality education that fosters the development of strong values, healthy self-esteem, and independent thinking. Lenana is also a center for excellence in teaching, learning and leadership development.

Education for Life
Focuses on life skills, leadership training, community outreach and social responsibility opportunities. Lenana provides amazing extracurricular activities including sports, arts, music, theatre, drama and dancing. Life Skills education both on and off the Lenana campus, focuses on HIV/AIDS awareness, early pregnancy prevention, human rights, communication skills and career counseling.

Entrepreneurship
Training allows students to put theory into practice as they develop a business plan and learn to manage the costs of running a business. The students collaborate with each other, learn computer skills, use their creativity to design, produce, market, and sell products and services. They also speak publicly in the community.

Community Outreach
SiSi Program trains Lenana graduates as mentors to go back into their home communities to teach life skills including reproductive health, communication skills and human rights to girls ages 10 - 18. The program is designed to educate communities about the negative outcomes of early marriage and teen pregnancy, which are two of the leading reasons why girls drop out of school in Kenya.

Financial Sustainability Projects
Lenana aims to achieve partial financial sustainability through a three-pronged approach which includes school-run businesses (including the Nalena Pad); a second stream of paying students which will decrease the cost per student; and support from an interest-bearing endowment fund that will help sustain the school indefinitely.

Environmental Sustainability
Lenana teaches environmental stewardship and operates an environmentally sustainable campus. The campus is off-the-grid and entirely run on solar-power, has a rainwater catchment system which provides the school with reliable, renewable water, and maintains organic gardens that provide 75% of the school’s produce.

Career Development
Support for the girls doesn’t stop at graduation. The program offers graduates career workshops, help in obtaining internships, and job placement assistance. In addition, 95% of graduates go on to continuing education beyond high school to enter university, and two-year certificate or diplomas in teaching, nursing, business and non-profit management.

IMPACT
Lenana girls are healthy, educated, confident, and prepared for the future. Lenana Girls High School (LGHS) has a proven track record of successfully working with our community and using rigorous metrics to assess the impact of our programs. We have kept girls in school, reduced early pregnancies, and changed girls who had done poorly in primary school into academic powerhouses who are outperforming students from across Kenya. Girls who were previously not considered worth educating are now among the top students in the county.

LGHS by the numbers:
  • 90% of all Lenana girls attend a college or university.
  • 100% of all Lenana girls in our first graduating class went on to a higher education program.
  • Lenana Girls High School has had three graduating classes since opening its doors in 2014 with 100% graduating in each class.
  • Despite a 75% dropout rate in neighboring schools (51% due to early pregnancy) no student has ever dropped out of the Lenana Girls High School.
  • Nearly 75% of the Lenana Girls High School students are orphans and earn university acceptance at the same rate.
  • Over 500 youth around the country benefit from Lenana’s sexual and reproductive health outreach programs each year.
  • The school through Kenya Ceramic Project provides the first clean drinking water in the area to over 12,000 families, including the Ministry of Health clinic each year.
  • Since opening, Lenana has impacted the lives of over 2,500 youth, offering some of the most promising education and health outcomes in Kenya
