About Pathfinder Academy
Pathfinder Academy is part of the larger non-profit Common Ground for Africa (CGA). CGA’s mission is to help mitigate poverty by developing and implementing sustainable development projects throughout the local community. Projects range from training community members in organic farming techniques, to providing microfinance funds and training to womens groups, to running a water filter project and more.
At the center of CGA is Pathfinder Academy , a primary school offering a top-notch education to more than 465 students, primarily orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs). The school has both day students and boarding students. Pathfinder is consistently ranked as the top primary school in the district, with students performing better on standardized testing than students from any other school in the area.
As many of the students are OVCs, they often do not have parents or caretakers to pay their school fees. Pathfinder tries to accommodate such students as it believes that no child should be deprived of an education, but it is virtually impossible to run a school where the majority of students cannot pay to attend. Therefore, Pathfinder relies on funds generated from its agriculture and livestock projects, volunteers, donors and student sponsors in order to continue providing a top quality education to its students.
